Dulce de Leche, a caramel-like confection beloved across Latin America, is made by slowly cooking sweetened milk until it transforms into a rich, golden treasure. It’s at the heart of many of my Favorite Dulce De Leche Desserts on my site, and one of my Favorite Things to use in recipes like these Dulce de Leche Chocolate Cake, Dulce de Leche and Apple Empanadas, and Spiced Apple Streusel Coffee Cake with Dulce de Leche.

If you browse my site, you’ll quickly see that Dulce de Leche and Passion Fruit are two of my favorite ingredients! 😉 This perfect dessert is a showstopper for special occasions, showcasing the alluring flavor of the Dulce de Leche in every spoonful.

If you’re looking for an indulgent yet effortless Dulce de Leche dessert, this recipe will not disappoint! I hope you love this easy dessert as much as I did creating it for you. Enjoy, and Buen Provecho!

    🍽 Equipment You'll Need

To make this Dulce de Leche Mousse, gather the following tools for a smooth and efficient process. These will make assembling and serving the dessert quick and effortless!

    • Small Bowls, such as dessert cups or individual ramekins, for serving.
    • A Piping Bag for clean and easy portioning.
    • An Electric Mixer makes the process simple and creates a smooth texture. Either a hand mixer or stand mixer work well. If you don't have an electric mixer, a large bowl and whisk can be used with a bit of extra effort.

    📝Ingredients and Substitutions

Only 3 ingredients are all you’ll need to make this Dulce de Leche Mousse, plus tips for substitutions and achieving the best results:

Dulce de Leche Mousse Ingredient Notes

Portioned Ingredients for Creamy 3-Ingredient Dulce de Leche Mousse

It’s amazing how just 3 ingredients can make something so delicious!

    1. CREAM: Use heavy cream or heavy whipping cream for the perfect texture. If you’re outside of the United States., double cream would be the substitute. Avoid cool whip; it doesn’t offer the same fresh, rich flavor or texture as fresh whipped cream.
    2. DULCE DE LECHE: You can use store-bought dulce de leche or homemade. Look for it in the baking aisle of your grocery store near condensed milk. A popular brand of dulce de leche is Nestlé La Lechera.
    3. MASCARPONE CHEESE: I love mascarpone cheese for its creamy richness, subtle sweetness, and mild tang. If you don’t have mascarpone, cream cheese can be used as an alternative, though it will add a slightly tangier flavor.

Using high-quality ingredients ensures your mousse will have the perfect balance of sweetness and the smooth, indulgent texture you’re looking for.

🍲How to Make Dulce de Leche at Home from Sweetened Condensed Milk

If you can't find Dulce De Leche in stores, making your own dulce de leche at home using sweetened condensed milk is a great option. This Easy Dulce De Leche Recipe creates that rich brown sauce with a rich caramel flavor, perfect for desserts. Here's how to do it using a pressure cooker or a large pot.

    Pressure Cooker Method

    1. Remove the label from an unopened can of sweetened condensed milk and place it in the pressure cooker on its side to prevent shaking.
    2. Add enough water to fully submerge the can.
    3. Seal the pressure cooker and cook on high pressure for 30–35 minutes.
    4. Allow the pressure to be released naturally, and let the can cool completely before opening. Note: This step is crucial to avoid injury or a mess.
    5. Once cooled, open the can to reveal Rich Dulce De Leche with its signature golden brown color and caramelized milk texture.

    Stovetop Pot Method

    1. Place the unopened can of sweetened condensed milk in a large pot and cover it entirely with water.
    2. Bring the water to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to maintain a simmer.
    3. Simmer for 2–3 hours, adding water as needed to submerge the can.
    4. Let the can cool completely before opening.

    Tips for First-Time Makers

    • If it’s your first time making homemade Dulce de Leche, try the pressure cooker method for simplicity and quicker results.
    • Leftovers: A can of sweetened condensed milk typically contains 14 oz, so you’ll have about 1/2 cup of leftover Dulce de Leche after making your mousse. Store the leftover dulce de leche in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks.
    • This process creates a batch of Dulce de Leche with a sweet caramel taste and a richcaramel flavor that pairs perfectly with desserts like mousse, cakes, or even as a topping for ice cream.

Making your own Dulce de Leche is one of the best things you can do to enjoy that signature Dulce de Leche flavor in your recipes easily and quickly.

    Dulce de Leche Uses

Some different ways to use leftover dulce de leche are over Ice Cream, swirl it into vanilla ice cream for a decadent caramel twist or drizzle it as a topping. Simple Cream Puffs filled with dulce de leche are delish. Drizzled over pancakes, waffles, or crepes, and lastly, as a dip for fresh fruit like apples or bananas.
