Escape the cold winter months with this passion fruit caipirinha, a delightful Brazilian cocktail.
A fantastic recipe that requires just a handful of ingredients (lime, cachaca, Passion Fruit, and just the right amount of sugar) and no fancy equipment.
This iconic drink, the Brazilians' national cocktail, transcends borders and seasons. A refreshing and sweet drink with a tangy finish and classic Brazilian flair.
This recipe was inspired by this other Passion Fruit Cocktail and another exotic cocktail I love, the Mexican Paloma.

Caipirinha: Brazil’s National Cocktail
Brazilians’ national cocktail, the Caipirinha, is a classic Brazilian cocktail made with Cachaça (a Brazilian distilled spirit) that has found its way to bars worldwide, particularly embraced in the United States.
I love this refreshing drink even during the cold winter months because it provides a touch of the tropics with its refreshing and tangy finish. The best part is that classic Brazilian Caipirinhas are the epitome of simplicity, making them a go-to. No fancy syrups or elaborate preparations.
But for a delightful twist, I am infusing this classic recipe with the vibrant tropical notes of one of my favorite fruits, the one and only, PASSION FRUIT with its exotic allure.
A reminder that even on the coldest winter days, a little bit of sunshine (and cachaça!) can go a long way.

Equipment
You don't need a fancy bar setup for this fantastic cocktail. A trusty cocktail shaker is ideal, but a rocks glass, a muddler (or the back of a spoon!), and some elbow grease will work fine.
Ingredients
- Lime, cut into wedges.
- Sugar (superfine Sugar or regular white Sugar)
- Cachaça – a distilled spirit made from fermented sugarcane juice and the most popular spirit among distilled alcoholic beverages in Brazil.
- Passion Fruit Concentrate - I used Goya's frozen concentrate found in Latin or international grocery stores. (passion fruit puree or fresh passion fruit pulp (seeds and all), are suitable substitutes if you can access fresh fruit. Even passion fruit juice will work in a pinch)
- Angostura bitters (optional, for a touch of depth and my added twist).
- Lime Wheel, Passion Fruit Seeds, or Mint Sprig for garnish (optional)
See the recipe card at the bottom of this post for quantities.
How To Make a Brazilian Passion Fruit Caipirinha
- Begin by cutting the lime lengthwise into 2 pieces. Trim off the stem end and the white membrane separating the sections. Cut crosswise into 8 pieces.
- In a cocktail shaker, combine lime wedges and sugar.
- Muddle the lime until the sugar is well incorporated and diluted and squeezed the lime juice.
- Add cachaca and passion fruit concentrate to the shaker.
- Optionally, include a dash of Amargo de Angostura (bitters) for added depth.
- Shake the mixture vigorously with ice cubes for 10 seconds.
- Pour the mixture into a rock glass.
- Garnish with a lime wheel or mint sprig if desired. And serve immediately. Cheers!
Top TIP: Classic Caipirinha is served with muddled limes, wedges, and all, typically not strained.
For a skinny Caipirinha version with less calories, substitute the sugar with monkfruit sweetener or with 1 ounce of this

Caipi, my favourite cocktail, made all tropical! The glasses are nearly too pretty to drink, but drink we did and seconds were had. Finally a perfect use for passion fruits when they are in season.
Now, what I didn't do was shake all the sugar until dissolved, but I left half of it just added last, since for me, one of the biggest joys of Caipirinha is that sugar crunch at the bottom of the glass together with the acidic fruit. So yummy!
Juyali (ju-ja-lee) says
That's amazing, Sonja! Your passion for the caipirinha and passion fruit shines through in your review. Cheers to that! 🍹😎
